Do you set goals?
I mean, when you think about what the next 365 days have in store for you, are you the type of person who goes with the flow, or the type to create something and make it happen? I’m definitely the latter. And I just freakin love this time of year! It’s full of reflection, and an important moment to ask yourself Who do I want to be 365 days from now? I’m always amazed at how many people ignore this question. How can you drive a car to a destination if you don’t know where you’re headed? It’s scary, but it’s important to give yourself permission to dream and to allow yourself to grow. Woah- rant over!
If you’re not used to creating goals, no worries! We will go through this step by step.
On January first, what I would recommend is taking one hour to yourself. I usually do one hour alone and 30 minutes with the hubs, but that one hour on personal growth I think is important. In the first 10-15 minutes, I allow myself to dream.
I start with these questions:
If I was doing exactly what makes me happy, what would my life look like?
If I was a better partner, what would I be doing differently from what I do today?
If I was at my financial goal, what would that look like?
If I was crushing it in my career, what would I be doing?
If I was doing God’s work, what would that look like?
What is something I’ve been wanting to do to grow but it always gets put on the back burner?
Once I have these items sorted out, I take a blank sheet of paper (or you can print out the one I created for you below) and I start to fill in the following:
Purpose Goals
These are the goals that bring you closer to your best life. Why were you put on this earth? What would bring you true fulfillment? It’s ok if you don’t have these answers yet, the key here is to be closer to those answers 365 days from now. Do you know how to do that? Invest time in thinking about those things.
My 2019 goals look like this:
- Spend 10 minutes per day reflecting on my wants, what makes me happy, and how to execute to get more of these things.
- 52 entries into my reflection journal this year.
- Give back: Volunteer for causes you believe in, spot-light others, support friends businesses.
Benefits: fulfillment, doing God’s work, making a difference
Personal Goals
These are the goals that fall under personal development. Do you long to continue your education? Buy a new home? Get a new hobby? Start a new career? Live a healthier life?
My 2019 goals here look like this:
- Register for a new course.
- Buy a new home with my love.
- Save $XXX per month for a down payment
- Pay off my student loan. Did it!!!
- Grow my social media account.
- Start a FaceBook page.
- Get 5000 YouYube Subscribers.
- Read 20 books (10 audio, 10 paper).
Under Personal Goals, I include categories like career, health, prosperity and people/relationship goals.
Career Goals
Here I look at where I want to be next year with my career. Some years, it’s not with the same company- and that’s OK!
For 2019:
- Hit all targets and maximize full bonus (for new house!)
- Foster relationships- learn from others, ask people to coffee twice a month.
- Take pride in my work, don’t be lazy- I have a crazy ability to be lazy.
- Make networking a priority- get out of my comfort zone.
Health Goals
Health means different things to different people. I’d encourage you to think both about your physical and mental health here. These goals might say hit the gym or cut that toxic relationship. Either way, focus on what would make you feel a little lighter in life.
My Goals:
- Hit the gym 3 times per week (Monday, Thursday and one-weekend date)
- Prep balanced meals- bring a lunch to work, make sure your meals contain a lot of colours, don’t skip breakfast!
- Meditate 5 times a week- continue to invest in the Headspace app (Not sponsored)
- Be financially healthy (See below).
Prosperity
Do you have a budget? Do you stick to it? I haven’t looked at my budget in some time and its something I need to get back to. I’ve got a whole spreadsheet that I used to fill in once a month. Keeping your budget top of mind will help you get to the other goals you have (paying for school, buying a new house, paying off your credit card).
My 2019 goals looked like this:
- Re-write your budget and stick to it
- Write down everything you purchase or make sure to look at your bank statements monthly.
- Make time for monthly reflection. Once a month fill out your excel spreadsheet and review where you over-spent and why. What categories are taking up most of your paycheck? Where can you lean out your spending? Should you look for new providers for insurance? Cell phone? Internet?
People/Relationship Goals
Who is in your circle? They say you are a combination of the 5 people you spend the most time with. This year I wanted to work on my relationship goals, including being a better friend and family member.
2019
- Find like-minded people. Go to networking events, get involved at work functions, make plans and stick to them.
- Work on family relationships- do more, expect less
- Respectful and loving relationship with hubs. He is a wealth of knowledge, remember that he can provide great information (drop your pride).
Play Goals
I think this one is important to include. Without play, you limit joy and growth. One of my play goals is to try a new experience once a month. Hubs and I have tried reflexology foot massages, float tanks, and a food tour together. This year we are hoping to get to an oyster shucking class, enjoy golf lessons and take a wine course.
I hope this post helps you with structuring your goals a little more if they’re something you have never focussed on. Feel free to leave in the comments other areas you include in your goals that I may not have listed here!
