Curly Hair Products

My Fav Products

What’s the question I get asked the most? What are your Go-to products? What is your Holy Grail? What can you not live without? I get it, if I see a great pic, and the Instagrammer doesn’t list the products, I look at it as such a missed opportunity. But the truth is, we all have different hair, and what works for me, may not work for you.

I’ve been using LUS Brands Curly for about 6 months now, I used their wavy formula before that; it was the first set they ever sent me (Jan 2018)- and I was ecstatic!

LUS had a learning curve

The first time I used the wavy, I had big voluminous hair. I also received a ton of compliments! I just wasn’t sure of the feel. Was it frizzy? Puffy? It felt.. unseeled.

Unseeled is the only way I know how to describe LUS as an all-in-one in my hair. It feels as though the cuticle is lifted, and it doesn’t leave my hair with a lot of shine. But that volume- it’s hard to give it up.

The problem with a lot of hair creams is that they are too thick, leaving my 2C hair feeling greasy and weighed down. With LUS, the cream is much lighter, has great slip, and the product lasts a long time. One bottle usually serves me for about 2-3 months (I wash and style once a week) and use about 16 pumps for my whole head (Gasp LOL). I have a lot of thick coarse hair. It retails for $24.00 USD or $30 CAD. The key to my success with this product? Adding a gel.

Cue up Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I have a love/hate relationship with this product. The truth is I love it.  I love how clean the product is, how it doesn’t turn my hair brassy, and how small the ingredient list is. My challenges with this product? It’s expensive ($19.99 CAD for 80z which isn’t a lot), it’s in a jar (Why do hair products still come like this? Who wants gel in their nails?!), it last about 1-1.5 months, and the Kinky Curly brand is one of the worst engaging hair companies on social media.

Pairing Kinky Curly with LUS is a great match. The custard is so light that it seels the hair without weighing it down. It creates a fab cast and then scrunches out to a soft curl. It gives my hair 2 extra days of wearing it down, and it’s easy to refresh with.

Do I think another gel would pair well with LUS? ABSOLUTELY! I’m just a creature of habit, and I don’t veer too far from my routine. It’s why I say no to 80% of the companies who offer to send me hair products. I like what I like.

Let’s take a look at LUS with and without gel. I understand that these pictures aren’t the same angle, but I’m hoping I can give some perspective.

I think it’s safe to say that LUS does well with a gel. On the Facebook groups I am a part of, I’d say the vote is 50/50 regarding if people love LUS or not. I always want to ask if people who don’t love it have tried pairing it with a gel, but I’m not the biggest fan of unsolicited advice.

The reason I love this product is because it is a super lightweight cream that works for all hair types and it consistently gets me to day 5 hair.

What is your fav hair cream? Do you go for a light cream or prefer the additional moisture of a heavier one? Have you tried this combo?

You have such beautiful curls!! When do you apply the KCCC, while your hair is ringing wet just after you’ve applied the LUS all-in-one? I use LUS wavy as the curly made my hair too greasy. I live in South Carolina, and the humidity seems to make my hair frizzy looking in the front. Was going to give KCCC a shot.

Thank you so much!! That is exactly what I do. I scrunch in the KCCC after I put the LUS in. Please let me know how it goes for you!

So you only use the LUS shampoo and leave-in? Mine came with a shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in. Does Kinky Curly Curling Custard smell good? I’m not a fan of the smell of LUS

I use all three shampoo, conditioner and all in one. KCCC smells ok, kind of sweet- like marshmallows. The smell is faint though and disappears after applying- not like LUS, which you can still smell after applying.

  3. Awesome post! Keep up the great work! 🙂

I use LUS and have similar hair texture to you. I find I need a gel too. I have just ordered some kinky curly custard and will see if I get better hold with it. My hair is fine, I’d say medium density now, as doesn’t seem as thick as when I was younger, but still good. It is also high porosity even now that my hair is basically all natural. No more color or bleach, but possibly some sun highlights on the ends. I noticed you said your hair was coarse, but I thought you said it was fine in one of the videos I watched. Will let you know how the KCC works for me.

      Hey Tracy!

I love that you have gone all-natural with your hair! My hair is definitely coarse, not fine at all. Each strand is thick. Over time it has changed texture, it is a bit softer than when I was younger, but I think that has everything to do with hydration. Please do let me know how KCCC works, remember- a little goes a long way!
